Dave: Reverting vandalism

Containers are seen across the galaxy, although many have found uses other than what they were designed for. In essence, a container is a metal or plastic cuboid for storing or moving inanimate objects.

History
Mankind has used cuboidal boxed for transporting cargo, prtected from the elements, since before recorded history. This practise possibly even dates back to Terra itself.

The reason for the popularity of these utilitarian objects is twofold: The flat sides of a container make it idea for the inexpensive display of advertising graphics (compared to the high fees commanded by the less dimensionally-challenged illustrators who emblazon cruisers with company colours), and the enclosed shape protects the cargo even if it should happen to be left planetside in harsh weather conditions.

However, in more recent years the design of the humble container has undergone a lot of development, not without its fair share of political turmoil.

First Draft
In the year 1779, a special church subcommittee determined that one of the major causes of inefficiency when transporting goods was the uneven size of crates and packages.
Therefore, the subcommittee created a document detailing several standard sizes of containers, in order that all packages could be neatly and efficiently stacked. This standard, EB17340, was enacted into law early in 1776. All containers must be made to the official specifications, and all vehicles designed to carry bulk cargo should accept crates of a standard size for easy loading.
This first draft defined each size of crate as being exactly 3 times the size of the next small size, providing several standard sizes in a geometric progression. The smallest container under this standard (known as class CC1) has width 2400mm, height 3461mm and length 4992mm. The next largest, the CC2, is 3461mm x 4992mm x 7200mm, which is exactly the size of 3 CC1 containers stacked end to end.

Technical Objections
The Galactic Ingineers Guild quickly objected to the standards of the first draft. While this series of progressive multiplication would allow the easy stacking of containers next to each other, it was felt by many that it would be more efficient if each container could be placed within the next largest size, for easier transportation when empty. After 9 months of debate, the Theocratic Science Service published their final verdict: That as the first draft had been written by appointed priests, it must be according to the intent of God and was therefore perfect.
Kreeg has the highest gravity of any settled planet, a fact which contributes to the short, bulky stature of people and animals living there.
The Kreeg also have a high tendency toward albinism.
Their main religion is a variant catholic cult known to the Kreeg as "The Orthodoxy".

Kreeg was the first planet to be terraformed by travellers through an accelerative discontinuity, in 8442. However, the discontinuity moved further and further outside the system, eventually leaving the settlers stranded. More than 3000 years passed before a temple ship managed to correctly determine the warp pathway to reach the world, during which time the entire planet was left completely isolated.

The extreme circumstances killed many of the inhabitants, and the colony only survived due to favourable conditions which allowed them to reproduce at a rate much higher than normal. The short lifespan and unfavourable conditions made for a significant evolutionary pressure, and by the time contact was restored, the Kreeg had diverged almost far enough to be counted a distinct subspecies of humanity.
Angel's Eye orbits an angry blue star, it's orbital period is around 780 standard days and it's rotational period is 27 standard days, it's axial tilt is 137°. It is not a particularly large planet although it is rather dense, giving it a surface gravity of 1.2G. The atmosphere is thin but oxygen rich.
The polar regions, which cover a large proportion of the planet, go through long periods of constant light and darkness whereas the rest of the planet merely has very long days. This causes serious problems for food production, although some species can still survive it, mostly by going into hibernation. People tend to live near equator in a thin band which doesn't have as extreme a climate.
The planet's surface is 60% covered in water, mostly extremely deep seas which store heat, mitigating some of the worst of the cold nights at the expense of stormy weather. The rest of the planet is composed of mineral rich rocky outcrops which rise from the sea in impressive cliffs and mountain ranges.

Dave:

The Kajeska-Maelstrom Engineering Company is a space engineering company that provides experience and design services for a variety of projects, particulariy Downlines, Orbitals and other Really Huge Things.
Most of them would love to move into stellar engineering if it weren't for the Theocratic Science Service's monopoly on it.

History
Founded in 926 by Archland Crucible Kajeska-Maelstrom and still using the same office on Sophia the company began as a way of speeding up the development and planning of public works projects by bypassing the bureaucratic nightmare that dominated Sophia's Class 3 / Class 4 transitional period. It managed a major coup by poaching a handful of disillusioned scientists and engineers from government projects despite paying them less. The company gained a reputation for ingenious solutions to power science problems and for using some clever black girders, however the company began to take on more and more people, eventually becoming almost as stagnant as the groups it was designed to replace. Things came to a head as one of the original crop of engineers found the delivery of his magnetically linked meta-material grid system had been cancelled by a bunch of accountants pending a "feasibility and safety study", this led to the company having little choice but to lose the baggage or lose the talent. They kept the Talent.
Almost overnight the company was restructured into what is more-or-less it's current form, unfortunately this was a horrible breach of some employees contracts and the ensuing legal battle almost bankrupted the company. Those that remained were a varied bunch of engineers, physicists, chemists, logistics experts and a couple of the more down-to-earth accountants. It was at this point that the company developed it's religious tendencies, in part due to the nature of it's remaking.
Since that point the company has never employed (at least permanently) more than 300 people.

Famous Projects
Project Ideon
The corporation was hired in 875 to work out how to remove one of the moons of Lexis V and put it into orbit around Newton's World. The whole operation took 8 years, with most of the work done in a 6 month period before the jump, the rest was making sure the thing would orbit properly despite the moon displaying odd gravitational responses.

Structure
The Kajeska-Maelstrom Engineering Company is structured in cells of employees ranging from five to ten members with employees changing cells quite frequently although long term partnerships are respected. The company has no real offices apart from the one on Sophia, instead it simply pays for it's employees to stay wherever they are needed and also pays for any equipment they may need to acquire in order to do their jobs.
Mostly employees pay for things and then claim back expenses vetted by their cell-mates, and by a neighbouring cell or cells for larger expenses. This act-now-worry-later model is only possible because of the immense stacks of money the company makes from it's work. When you need a space elevator Now then they are the people to go to.

Unfortunately this also means that the company takes some odd risks when it comes to indulging the eccentricities of some of it's engineers however cross checking on larger projects leads to more sensible designs (and a few truly impressive arguments). For big project the company organises itself into super-cells that consist of everyone they need for the project, they then go out and hire everything they need for the job, preferably from local resources, this can however lead to a lot of makeshifting as certain things are not always available everywhere.
The same approach is applied to their science although things are (almost) always quite rigorously tested before being allowed into anything vital, in the past this has lead to some very innovative, some would say insane, solutions to construction problems.
The company's lack of centralised resources can become a problem when constructing large and specialised objects, mostly they outsource actual construction or use the facilities of anyone they can persuade/bribe to let them, seeing as how their projects are often for the good of the local public they are rather successful and can usually source most things. They have little in the way of proprietary technology which is a big weakness for their competitors to exploit, made worse by their engineer's habits of leaving as little black-boxed as possible for ease of maintenance.

Executive authority is wielded by a handful of people in the company who are chosen by their peers, aside from in serious disputes they are simply just another employee and this status can be revoked by a vote of no confidence. Having no offices can make communications difficult, the company equips it's employees with everything they can to stay in touch with each other, even to the point of sending cells out with portable cloud hardware capable of making a connected environment in the middle of no-where as well as phones, Worldnet access tools, rented nodes and places for storing plans and other data securely. The main office even has a secured, dedicated interspace relay for dragging up plans of old projects and acting as a mail server.
When they are not actively on a project employees are encouraged to experiment with new technology, although the company has no directed research and development agenda, engage in building links with groups who may become new clients or sources of materials or labour or help out with other projects where they can. People that do not make productive use of their time are normally quickly ratted out by their co-workers however.

Employees

For big project the company organises itself into super-cells that consist of everyone they need for the project, they then go out and hire everything they need for the job, preferably from local resources, this can however lead to a lot of as certain things are not always available everywhere.

Employees
<ooc label="Plot Information">
The Kajeska-Maelstrom Engineering Company was written for a one-shot called Macro-Exorcism based around the space elevator it built on Angel's Eye</ooc>

A fast (and sometimes dangerous) form of transport. The bladeboard is simply a metal or plastic rod 40 to 60cm in length, with several wheels mounted along it. At either end are lugs which can clip onto the bottom of suitably designed blader boots. The wheels (usually with the exception of a larger balance wheel at one end) are usually simple metal discs with quite a sharp edge. This means that the wheels can be pushed into the narrow groove which protects the power feed in many inner-city monorail systems, drawing enough current along the length of the board to power a light motor in the larger end wheel.

Bladeboards are sometimes available in sports shops, but most gang bladers will disregard these entirely. They seem to rely entirely on makeshift manufacturing by other members of their gang. In some cities, there are also a number of small, specialist shops which specialise in bladeboards. These are set up by single craftsmen, who usually have an existing reputation for making good blades. Every board will be custom-made for its owner, with many variations in wheel spacing and balance which only an expert could understand. However, most of the business of these shops is repair and maintenance - something which an experienced blader takes very seriously.

Variants
There are also more advanced boards available, although some purists (especially those who regard bladeboarding as a sport) would say that these are not true blades and should be considered a separate category.

Skinboard
These boards are missing the enlarged (and sometimes powered) wheel at the rear. This means that the rider must be able to balance entirely on a razor-thin line of wheels, quite a difficult task. On some worlds where all powered transport is regulated, it is necessary to pass a proficiency test on a skinboard before acquiring a license for a powered blade or skates.

Accel Bladeboard
An accel board has a telescopic shaft, with one of the 3 or 4 blade wheels on each segment. The board's length can change by up to 15cm, and this is used as a throttle for the motorised wheel at the rear. On many boards, the rear wheel has its own boot-lug rather than being connected to the shaft, allowing the rider to lift it off the ground momentarily by tilting his foot.

Vector
An attempt by Maveggan Flight Vehicle Company to break into a market where corporate nametags and designer labels previously had no impact. These boards were mass produced, and sold on the net and in shops as 'the new direction of bladeboarding'. The initial high price when these were released in 847 led many to disregard them as "rich kids' toys". However, the price dropped quickly and before long serious bladers began to experiment with the Vector line in curiosity about the new possibilities.

The original Vector-C was supplied with a specially designed set of boot-clamps, and the rear wheel was mounted directly on the back of the boot. A simple mechanism rotated the wheels to keep them parallel with the rider's front boot, allowing easier steering than a traditional bladeboard while the rear wheen rotated independantly to provide better balance. Unfortunately, this design could not be powered as easily as a traditional board.

The Vector-G was obviously targetted more at experienced bladers. It was still sold without a motor for legal reasons (being the health and safety legislation on many worlds), but as the wheel was now a common size it could easily be exchanged for a motor taken from just about any street bladeboard. Now, the position of the rear foot relative to the angle of the board was used to rotate the blade wheels, while the rear wheel could either stay parallel with the others or with the board.

The most recent model, the Vector-A, is only available on a limited number of worlds due to legal issues, but is often available through bladeboard specialists elsewhere. It is a simple extension of the Vector-G: adding a good engine, with Accel style control.

Some have speculated that Magevan must be making a loss to sell the newer Vectors at such a low price. It has been speculated that this is a marketting decision, pushing teenagers to associate the company with an ideology of speed and power, which will make a big difference when they are old enough to buy a real cruiser.
Although it is never explicitly stated, many believe that the Service is responsible for the use of devices which allow promising scientists (and more than one famous genius) to be brainwashed during confession before their admittance to the society.

More contentiously, some believe that the Service provides otherwise forbidden technology to the extreme militant Order of St Carl. Officially, there is no such order.

Dave: Undo revision 1345 by 194.25.164.54 (Talk)

A period ranging from around 7000 to 1120, during which much scientific research was suppressed. During this time, the church promoted the idea that God was the creator of the universe, and as such to seek a deeper understanding of the universe was to attempt to become like God. Many things were classified as "beyond what man was meant to know", and research in these areas became difficult to finance unless it produced immediate profit for corporate sponsors.

However, at the time, many innovations (especially in so-called Power science) were of use to the church as their control of civilisation expanded. These researches, therefore, were encouraged and even sponsored by the church. This apparent theological contradiction was well expressed by a slogan "Engineers know how, God knows why"

Physics
Most advances in physics were in the field of engineering - applying classical physics to the problems of large bodies of rock, planets and stars. Meanwhile, the Theocratic Science Service began studying warp technology in depth, although their discoveries were kept secret.

Chemistry
Chemistry became little more than materials science during the dark ages. Any study of quantum mechanics - the exploration of why certain interactions occur - was strongly discouraged. Even a hundred years ago, chemistry classes in schools were more like alchemy than pre-dark age chemistry. Students are expected to learn by rote the properties of vast numbers of substances, and recognising patterns is considered more valid than attempting to explain them.

Biology
Medicine is popular. Plant and animal biologists understand the techniques of selective breeding in order to create a species more able to survive in a certain environment. The study of genetics, or any form of nanotechnology, was expressly forbidden. It is in this field, more than any other, that much knowledge has been lost during the new dark ages. When settling a new planet, it may be possible to breed crops more suited to the environment. However, in the era of power science, it would be considered a lot more appropriate to simply move the planet slightly in its orbit - applying brute force to create the environment you want.
It can be trained to perform most simple jobs. It has 2 hands, but these can be disconnected and replaced by a variety of tools such as polishing discs, drills, whisks, or whatever else is appropriate to its job.

Most tools cost either $250, $450 or $995 Fylings Dollars.

It is available in 4 styles:
# Professionsl (black, with silver pinstripes and trim)
# Executive (Burgundy and grey)
# Extreme (Electric blue with toroidal black lightning-flash design)
The colour is bonded directly into the polymer exoskeleton, so can't be scratched off by damage. For corporate orders over 500 units (such as Fylings traffic police), Global Electronics will produce these in company colours or uniform, to the customer's specification.

A maintenance robot, often seen on orbital facilities. It was one of the first units created by Galactic X Datel to test their 4.2 AndrOS system.

It is often cited by fans (though without factual basis) that the same marketing team responsible for Cubeputers was hired to create a brand image for a new service droid, and that Datel sued them after the result was a clearly derivative name and no real marketing campaign.

Appearance
The Cylindroid is (as the name suggests) a squat cylinder, about 1.2m tall and 60cm in diameter. It has triple-jointed manipulator arms and extensible peripheral/data ports all around its body, as well as a lockable internal storage area (which by default holds a small toolbox). It is supported by 2 legs which are parallel to the cylinder, jointed in the middle, and have magnetic tracks on either end.

The U-Go (an altered spelling of the original name, Yugo, after its chief designer Yugosalindraman Bilendrovicz) is a cheap and mostly reliable ground car, commonly used on low-class worlds with a sub-standard mass transit system.

Rather than painting the body, as many rivals do, a chemical process is applied to the Rigid Xylenel panels, resulting in brightly coloured, semi reflective surface which can appear iridescent in some light. Common colours include flame red, burgundy, shocking pink, crocus yellow, sunburst orange, alien green and hologram violet. No black or white, or non-metallic-finish, versions are available.
If the answer is "They're what androids are called in (some other series)" then adding them to this world seems rather odd --Dave 16:38, 18 April 2009 (UTC) (actually User:Angel)

The most commonly used size is the 280g Minicrunt, but versions as small as the 12g micro-crunt exist. The basic size is 2.2kg, and only normally used for demolitions and by mafia bosses. The 112kg Mega Crunt and 1750kg Terror crunt are virtually never seen.

A household support android made by Diomedes Systems, based on Global Electronics's Utilitron chassis.

Unlike the base model, however, the Domestron uses an industry standard peripheral connector, allowing many domestic food mixers, coffee machines and similar appliances to be connected through its wrist adaptors. It also uses the newer operating system 4.2 AndrOS, giving it greater intellectual flexibility.

However, the high price means that this device is out of the reach of most households, and it only finds common use with disabled users who would otherwise not cope with day-to-day household tasks.
