Hereditary chairman of the [[Maveggan Flight Vehicle Company]], as son of the founder [[Harlan Maveggan]], and father of the current CEO [[Wald J Maveggan]].

For much of his life, Cairfax hated being seen as a figurehead, or a spoiled rich kid. He was educated at the finest colleges, including [[Rylands University]], and travelled frequently around the [[Federation of Known Worlds|Federation]], but always worried that his qualifications were academic. Determined to ensure that his own son wouldn't be as useless as he saw himself, he enrolled young Wald into the [[Gracini University]] faculty of engineering.
