Founded by the [[Vermendanyan Empire]] in 1945, [[Gradislav]] was an unremarkable mining colony until struck down by the [[Chrome]] epidemic. However, the virus was even more virulent among [[Vermen]] than humans, and the planet as a whole suffered a 94% mortality rate.

The [[Superior Mining Consortium]] did not deliver any medical aid to its employees. Instead, a fleet of unmanned [[carrier]]s were sent to deliver automated mining equipment. Within a month, the regular shipments of iron, aluminium, tungsten and selenium ores were being shipped out on their previous schedule, with no human or Vermen involvement. Some conspiracy theorists claim that the company had been planning this for several years, and the virus gave them an excuse they had been waiting for to replace their employees with machines. The more eccentric even allege that the company may have created the [[Chrome]] virus as part of some grand cost-cutting scheme (although nobody would say the extent of the disease's spread could have been anticipated).

The living population is now gathered in 3 district cities: <address>[/Warsef], [/Greenbank] and [/Balldefurzehrung]</address>. These are a mixture of the survivors from the virus, and settlers who moved in subsequently. Approximately 40% of the population is now Vermen.

Many tourists now visit this world, seeking to explore the abandoned overground cities. It is a common team-building exercise for a group of colleagues to set up camp in one district block for a week, and attempt to reconstruct the social networks of the former residents using clues from whatever they left behind. There have also been 3 movies made, based on recovered diaries. It is now a standard clause on visiting visas that the Consortium is entitled to a 30% share on any profits made from these researches.
