A period ranging from around 7000 to 1120, during which much scientific research was suppressed. During this time, the church promoted the idea that God was the creator of the universe, and as such to seek a deeper understanding of the universe was to attempt to become like God. Many things were classified as "beyond what man was meant to know", and research in these areas became difficult to finance unless it produced immediate profit for corporate sponsors.

However, at the time, many innovations (especially in so-called [[Power science]]) were of use to the church as their control of civilisation expanded. These researches, therefore, were encouraged and even sponsored by the church. This apparent theological contradiction was well expressed by a slogan "Engineers know how, God knows why"

==Physics==
Most advances in physics were in the field of engineering - applying classical physics to the problems of large bodies of rock, planets and stars. Meanwhile, the [[Theocratic Science Service]] began studying warp technology in depth, although their discoveries were kept secret.

==Chemistry==
Chemistry became little more than materials science during the dark ages. Any study of quantum mechanics - the exploration of why certain interactions occur - was strongly discouraged. Even a hundred years ago, chemistry classes in schools were more like alchemy than pre-dark age chemistry. Students are expected to learn by rote the properties of vast numbers of substances, and recognising patterns is considered more valid than attempting to explain them.

==Biology==
Medicine is popular. Plant and animal biologists understand the techniques of selective breeding in order to create a species more able to survive in a certain environment. The study of genetics, or any form of nanotechnology, was expressly forbidden. It is in this field, more than any other, that much knowledge has been lost during the new dark ages. When settling a new planet, it may be possible to breed crops more suited to the environment. However, in the era of [[power science]], it would be considered a lot more appropriate to simply move the planet slightly in its orbit - applying brute force to create the environment you want.
