The Empire is an influential but isolationist grouping of planets. [[Vermendanyan]] was originally settled by an extremist [[cult]], who believed that it was their duty to make themselves as strong as possible in order to better serve God's will.

Those who do not subscribe to this philosophy, and by extension all outsiders, are often distrusted by the Vermendanyani people. The cultural separation is further exaggerated by the Vermen language, which was artificially created and is used in all formal situations within the Empire.

The cult exerts a tight control over reproduction among Imperial citizens. The use of a drug known as ''Elixir'', which increases the incidence of multiple births as well as boosting fertility in general, is compulsory in many circumstances. The population is kept stable by destroying babies determined to be genetically inferior. Over the past 8 millennia, this process has led to the Empire being a separate group ethnically as well as culturally.

Many Vermendanyani consider themselves to be non-human, although they are not yet diverse enough to truly be considered a separate species. Vermendanyani are tall and slim, and almost always have pale skin and dark hair (both considered to be attractive features in their culture). They find it easier than most people to gain weight through exercise, and thus tend to have more muscle mass than most humans. The most distinctive change made by the cult's selective breeding programme is that many people have a less-dense ribcage, with wide flat bones which could (given a couple of hundred generations more) evolve into an almost solid shell around the vital organs.
