AirNet is the de facto name for a common short-range data communication system. The standard is based on different but compatible implementations of the same concept by a dozen different electronics companies. They quickly realised that it was of commercial benefit to all of them to make their proprietary systems inter-compatible.

The system has a theoretical maximum range of 112m, although this is drastically reduced by some types of obstacles, and there are many devices on the market with higher power transmitters, increasing the area covered by up to 10 times.

The most common use for AirNet devices is in remote controls for consumer electronics; nearly all home AV equipment, and in some areas even home heating and lighting systems, can be controlled by Control AirNet datagrams. There are also devices implementing media broadcast protocols (AirNet Audio Layer and AirNet Video Layer), allowing short-range voice communication, or wireless display screens.

AirNet is also extended by the Scatternet system, although this protocol isn't sponsored by any of the manufacturing companies.
