Destructive pattern interference is a type of radiation which can be created by a relatively simple mechanism, involving electromagnetic stimulation of certain complex organic molecules. This radiation has relatively little interaction with most matter, although it alters the stability of certain proteins.

Its most common use is to protect against energy weapons in secure areas: any ZPM-powered device passing through a destructive pattern field will overload, usually releasing enough energy to reduce the weapon to a fused lump of ceramic.

As well as their common use on line stations, and around jail facilities on world which use incarceration as a major form of punishment, there have been some artistic uses of the fields. In 1094, artist Wainn Polkett created a pyrotechnic display by catapulting various classes of ZPM into a large field erected over the Lambdacridian city of Skeuller.

There are always scientists somewhere working on destructive pattern fields, trying to find other uses for them. However, the only notable discovery in recent years has been by independent tattooist Danyelle Fielding, who found that it is possible to construct a pattern generator cheaply from nanocels, using natural chemicals in the host's fat cells instead of the complex artificial compounds that other manufacturers use.
