Lift, dropbox and boxcar are slang terms used in various parts of the universe for a city train. A purely vertical system is more likely to be known as a lift or dropbox (depending whether the speaker usually goes up or down when going to town on it), while a boxcar can be vertical or horizontal. Train is also heard more often on systems with self-powered carriages, while these 3 terms are applied to a metal box being pulled along a cable by an external engine.
If the cable or rail is a downline, the term used is nearly always elevator.
