A planet primarily of academic interest, Subtura's human population is less than a billion, split between semi-rural agricultural villages, and a few large cities (mostly dominated and governed by their universities).

History

Before the start of the New Dark Ages, there was a technology which could possibly allow the creation of artificial life, without a soul. The so-called key to life held a record of complex chemical structures which they believed formed an archive of the true nature of most of the galaxy's plants and animals.

However, as the study of genetic engineering was slowly restricted and then banned, some scientists decided that they could not tolerate the destruction of all their work: If they had to destroy their heretical library, they would first create an environment where the extinct creatures from their records could be re-introduced and grow naturally. That place was Subtura - a planet of extremes, with entire continents of desert and tropical jungle, as well as a massive ice-shelf at the clockwise pole.
