A computer program which sits around waiting for an instruction. Originally they would wait for an error signal from some other program, and report this to the developers' registry, but the term is now used to mean any software which waits for a trigger condition; such as the module of the Dragon Voice Recognition system which waits for a specific tone before initialising the command parsing module.
