Heretical crimes are those which are deemed unforgivable by Ecclesiastical Law. Although punishments for crime vary from world to world, there are some specific conditions that apply to heresy:

  1. Failing to report a heretic is a crime which must receive the same punishment as the heresy itself (with the exception that planetary governments aren't required to make negligence a capital offence)
  2. A heretic is not permitted on board a temple ship until they have both served their sentence in full, and made adequate confession and penance. In many cases, this means they are permanently stuck on the world where they were caught
  3. There is no statute of limitations on heresy; once you have committed it, no amount of time, or future redeeming actions can be taken into consideration
  4. There is no extradition for heresy; a heretic may be tried under the laws of the world where they are arrested, or may be tried there under the laws of the planet where the offence was committed. Quite often, they are tried and punished twice for the same heresy.
