When his parents died in <date>998</date>, Winstan was unusually mature for his young age. He found himself unable to cope with the thought of separation from his younger brother Thorston, and so decided to get a job claiming to be his father, in order to provide for the two boys. He eventually managed to find work as a freighter pilot, though he was horrified at the safety standards that the company operated under.

As soon as he was old enough, Winstan recruited his brother, and the two set up their own haulage company. He promised that as long as they were in charge, this firm would have a perfect safety record. The company is now known as Sirrius Haulage, and has been the market leader for several years.
