Gates are a popular means for shadownet users to transmit images, although many clients still do not support this (and many users have an irrational hatred of "media whores" for whom text-only communication isn't good enough).
Images are uploaded to an insecure multi-homed worldnet node (such as the Enterprise scheduling site) using a variety of known exploits. A reference key (a public key required to access and decrypt the image) is then posted to the shadownet echo. Compatible clients will download the image and insert it into the appropriate message as soon as it becomes available on their ghostnet.
Also, the Shadowtalk term "Gates-box" (or "box of gates") for an easily cracked system is sometimes seen shortened simply to "Gates" - although in this case it is always capitalised.
As of 844, Gates is also seen as an adjective. It can mean either insecure, or in a more general sense fragile or badly designed.
