Sepulchrus Divinorum, irreverently referred to as Dead Pope World, is the final resting place for the majority of Popes in living memory. Its surface is 80% water, which is usually calm due to the simple stellar configuration (no moons or other close planets - just an uninhabited brown dwarf approximately 55AU further out) and thin atmosphere. There is a single city,
[/Grunther]
, of approximately 3600 inhabitants.
The majority of the planet's surface is either covered with wild woodlands (with no carnivorous animals, and mostly blossoming trees which do not naturally grow large), or is decorated with the tombs of past Popes. Since the reign of Pope John Paul VII, nearly a thousand Popes have been interred here, each with his own mausoleum. The later buildings especially are complex facilities, with books and murals depicting the Pope's life and works.
Half of Grunther's population are tourist guides, with the other half being retained for building work. The planet also has 9 line stations, totalling about 2000 residents divided between carrier pilots, administrators, and guides. There is no legislative government, as this world is subject to Divine Law.
Among the islands of the Necropolis, there are also a small number of places for visitors to buy simple food, as well as shrines for those Popes who are not actually buried here, and those whose tombs are less accessible.
There has been one known attack on Sepulcrus, in 1136. A cult known as the Priests of Gravadia bombed the tomb of Pope John XXI. The Pope's body was protected from desecration, as the sarcophagus was miraculously transformed into a block of white marble at the moment it was split open. Some eyewitnesses claim that they saw the Pope's spirit momentarily, as it transmigrated into a nearby statue of Saint Christ the Warrior Triumphant. Since then, a fleet of tanks has been in orbit around the planet, in 14 Great Circle paths, ready to protect against invaders, and all 9 downlines are covered by destructive pattern fields, as well as chemical analysers in the elevators set to detect explosives.
