Fylings

Fylings is governed by a centralised global government known as the United Executive Council (UEC) headed by the President of the United Nations of Flyings. Each individual country is headed by a Prime Minister. Although apparently democratically and freely elected the Prime Ministers and the President are in fact puppets controlled by the Global Elite. The Global Elite are descended from the former monarchies who ruled the Kingdoms of old before the outbreak of democracy in 997. The Global Elite have achieved their centuries long goal of centralised government with a single currency (the Fyling Dollar), a central bank and control most of their citizens via mandatory Keytag registration and the international police.

Their primary import are the narcotics Fresh and Joone, which are fed into the water supply to keep the masses under control. In exchange for this they export most of their food produce which has caused mass famines. Citizens have the freedom to travel anywhere on the planet on the world wide train service. Unemployment rate is extremely high as is hyper-inflation due to the government insisting on printing more money to try and deal with a recession but most of the populace are in a drugged stupour and haven't realised this.

Individuality is not encouraged; strict conformity is governed by the UEC. Facial hair is forbidden for men under 30 with men 30 and over being obliged to wear beards but not moustaches. Following the state religion is compulsory. However, the government actively discourages Digitalists from settling on Fylings, and the Church of Fylings (of which weekly attendance is compulsory) has declared Blankdom heretical.

Geography

Less than 5% of the planet's surface is water, and the 'oceans' would barely qualify as lakes elsewhere in the world. Approximately 30% of the remaining land area is metropolitan, 60% agricultural, and 10% is land of natural, or cultural/historic interest.

Chrome

Fylings was heavily hit by the Chrome epidemic. In Octember 890, a heretic known as the Prophet of Fylings declared a holy pilgrimage, and followers of this cult helped to spread the plague planetwide. In addition, the drugs fed to the population reduced their resistance to the disease. Now, the cities are entirely uninhabited, and about one in ten farmsteads has human staff. The Global Elite, several of whom survived in the quarantine of line station 6, have found that a robot population is much easier to control.

Since this date, the global police is no longer so global, and the ID Tag system (never particularly effective without greater infrastructure) is no longer compulsory.
