An avatar (currently considered a heretical concept) was once believed to be an aspect of the greater Church. As the Catholic Church is too complex to be comprehended by a mortal brain, it can be imagined as a kind of committee of different aspects, or avatars, each responsible for a specific part of the world. Prayers can then be directed to an avatar, instead of to the church itself, allowing humanity to better understand it.
Belief in Avatars in this way is commonly known as polytheism. It is considered heretical, as the only way to comprehend the church should be through the Divine Trinity, composed of the Terran Church and its Immaculate emissary, the Pope.
