Vert gangs are a specific subset of street gangs, usually associated with the post-retro fashion subculture. Vert is usually only seen in urban areas on class 3 or higher worlds.
The name 'vert' is a shortened form of 'vertical'. This epiphet comes from the phenomenon of vertical drop, a term used by some bladeboard or jetcycle gangs to refer to jumping between roadstrips on different levels rather than using slopes and climbs.
When vertical drops were outlawed (due to the danger to hover pilots on intervening levels), some groups who appreciated dropping as some kind of extreme sport carried on and revelled in their newly illegal status. Over the next few months, many merged with the so-called neopunk protection rackets, merging the punk and post-retro fashions to create a style of their own.
