Goggles Cough

A disease often suffered by miners; named because the first sufferers on Nix blamed the "odd smelling" rubber of their safety goggles.

It starts as a cough, which can last up to 18 months before symptoms progress to include itching around the nose, rectal bleeding and partial anterograde amnesia. If spotted before these symptoms start, an intensive dose of steroids (usually over the course of 3 weeks, during which the patient must be kept in a clean room as the treatment may compromise their immune system) will cure it; although the cough continues in about 10% of cases, possibly due to persistent lung damage, the other symptoms are unlikely to appear. However, once any of the later symptoms appear, it seems to be unresponsive to any treatment.
