On shadownet gates, a plain text document. These are different from other files posted to gates, as they could easily be recognised as foreign content by system administrators. Therefore notes are generally uploaded encrypted, with the message ID which references them being the decryption key.

Also, a shadowtalk term for anything more complex than it needs to be, or for any kind of out-of-band communication. Often heard in offline communications as a verb, for example "I'll note you that," meaning to send someone a book because the subject is too complex to explain verbally.
