The Voyages of John of Arc
A film released in <date>1066</date>, detailing some events of the evacuation of Gaia in <date>5569</date>. Although the film was marketed as historical, there was very little factual background to base it on.
The film focusses around captain John of Arc and his crew, including his pet and first mate, a talking penguin known as Noah. After evacuating the last of the population from the planet Gaia (in the film threatened by an imminent supernova), John decides to save the animals too, but his efforts are impeded by space pirates, a radiation storm, and a mysterious bounty hunter seeking to assassinate the captain.
In the film, John has been injected with a Starfarer Gene which allows his ship to travel faster than light without passing through the Vault of Heaven; this makes it possible for him to return to Gaia without the aid of a Temple Ship, but caused some controversy when the film was released as it implies the heretical actions of a pope. The film was eventually allowed to be released uncensored, after it was decided that Generic Engineering undoubtedly occurred in the Golden Age era; and was not forbidden at that point. However, on some worlds, the film was modified to include an additional character, a Confessor who seems friendly on the surface but is hinted to have dispatched the bounty hunter.
