Edgecore
Edgecore is a distinctive fashion, popular especially among vert gangs, which currently enjoys a questionable legal status.
Straightedge
Around the year 860, electronic surveilence was again having a sudden boost in popularity. One space pirate gang figured this could only make things easier for them - they designed body suits with patterns of zigzag and parallel lines, arranged in such a way that the current market leader in face-recognition software would lock onto the lines rather than the individual's face. The number of cameras in a class 4 or 5 city meant that it is highly unlikely for a bone drone to be looking at any particular camera, so even wanted fugitives could move easily through the city without being spotted.
This kind of stealth was incredibly cheap compared to alternatives like a vanishing suit, and quickly became popular. In addition, seeing the new fashion among pirates made many street gang members (who often see pirates as role models) want something similar. This allowed innovative pirates to sell identical suits as a fashion item (under the faux designer label Straightedge Chic), giving the suits a distinct advantage over a mask or veil in that wearing one was no longer suspicious.
Between 860 and 855, wearing Straightedge became illegal on many worlds. The real fatal blow to the style came in 858, when wearing Straightedge (whether real or immitation) on temple ships was prohibited by Ecclesiastical law, and the Inquisition raided the Straightedge Chic design studios.
Edgecore Fashion
In 849, a new designer known as Cassius G Zero introduced a style which he called hardcore straightedge flash, allegedly taking the 'core lines' which had made straightedge 'cool', but removing the 'plugins' which caused so much trouble to security cameras. After a few test cases, the Inquiition declared that these styles were not similar enough to be covered by the Straightedge prohibition, and that any straightedge influences were only cosmetic. In order to play it safe, Zero soon changed the 'straightedge' in his style's name to 'edge', and the fashion press quickly applied the shortened tag Edgecore as a generic term for both Hardcore Edge Flash (HEF) and its immitators.
