General Description

With his long white hair tied back in a ponytail, his lined face and craggy nose, he looks more pilgrim than priest. He typically wears either normal street clothes, a black suit with a frock coat or a simple cassock. He travels with his full ecclesiastic dress, though he only uses it for specific rites and when traveling through the Vault of Heaven. He almost always carries his seal of office, the Key and torch symbol of his order, and has an iron key and some sort of torch about his person at all times.

Early History

Born on [Insufficient Clearance], the son of a landscape gardener and his wife religion occupied a major place in his early life, however it was not until the age of 7, when he saw Pope Marantus XXIIX preaching mass at the Cathedral Magnum of St Lavarosse that he made up his mind that the clergy was his calling. Getting into the seminary was difficult but he kept trying and was eventually accepted.

Significant Events

Morion joined the Order of the Key and Torch in 902 after his gift for spotting lies was noticed by one of their agents. He was assigned to study under Deacon Alacanti and spent several years traveling with the Deacon and getting a feel for life in other parts of the galaxy.

When Alacanti abandoned him on Granaar to pursue another lead, Reverend Rain continued his investigation into the so-called Heirophant of Granaar, eventually exposing his falsehoods to the world. For this he was elevated to the position of Confessor-Deacon in 897 aged only 26.

He uncovered a number false religious figures before in 890 he was assigned to investigate the False Prophet of Fylings. On the way he was caught up on the events onboard the Temple of the Revelation leading to the release of the Chrome Virus on Catterall. When Ecclesiastical Law was declared Rain was the ranking church official on the planet (or more accurately in orbit on the quarantined line station) and he was put in charge of the response to the outbreak.

It was at this point that Rain made his reputation amongst those cleared to know of his involvement, it is said that he commandeered a number of stimulants from the medical lab and worked on resolving the outbreak for the next 5 days before he collapsed from exhaustion. In this period he gained notoriety for spending a significant period of his time trying to save the soul of a minor street punk, a period during which 170,000 people died. The official history states that a minor scientist detected signs of the outbreak and heroically alerted the church before succumbing to the disease herself.

Current Situation

After the Chrome situation had mostly played out Rain requested permanent assignment to tracking the origin of the virus and the conspiracy behind it, offending many of the clergy by refusing to attend his own commendation ceremony. Since then he has singularly failed to conclude his investigation, always chasing after some deeper conspiracy, although his intermediary reports have lead to a number of actions by the church.

About three years ago he was assigned an apprentice by the order. although he had left by the time they arrived. He is currently aware that someone is tracking him but has not had chance to specifically investigate it, believing it to be linked to the conspiracy.

His only regular companion is a thuggish looking man, although the exact relationship between the two is not entirely clear to those not well briefed on his actions.

Personality

Rain is a true believer in a world full of liars, somehow he is not bitter about this. He truly wants to help those who will accept help and feels a mixture and frustration and anger to those who reject the word of God outright.

Rain will never willingly kill those who do not understand what they are doing is wrong and will avoid harm coming to them far more than many members of the church. Despite this he is willing to do almost anything else for the greater good.

He believes that the body is transitory and, although it should be preserved as much as possible, the soul is infinitely more precious and in need of saving. The bodily death of the people of Fylings was, to him, less important than the redemption of even a single soul, as he knew he could not offer spiritual guidance to them any better than the Bishop, and so he focussed his efforts on where he believed he could do the most good.

There are those who accused him of cowardice for staying on the line station during the outbreak, however this was actually because he was carrying the virus at the time.

Other information

Rain is a Confessor, a 'psychic' with the ability to sense when someone is lying or keeping information from him. He knows a lot more about people than he lets on, and in most cases doesn't actually care what they say as long as they are honest.

Roleplaying Notes

What makes them

Angry?: People abusing the belief of others.

Happy?: He sees the overcoming of obstacles as a triumph of righteousness.

Nervous?: Every time he starts a new phase of his investigation, he thrives on it.

Disappointed?: When a puzzle is deceptively easy to solve.

Afraid?: That being such a skeptic all the time may cause him to lose his faith in God.

Amusing?: He appreciates a good (or terrible) pun, although he isn't very good at coming up with them himself.

Deeper Questions

What are they keeping from others around them?:

In the Case of the Heirophant of Granaar he falsified a key piece of evidence, he knew the Heirophant was lying but could not prove it. The fact that that case lead to his promotion still keeps him awake at night.

What do they like most about themselves?:

"God has provided me with a talent I am in a position to use it to the fullest ub His service"

What would they change about themselves if they could?:

Sometimes, after a long investigation, he wishes he could switch off more. He analyses every sermon he attends for signs of deceit and every time he hears of a miracle he subconsciously looks for the trick .

What is their greatest ambition?:

"To discover the second coming of the Messiah, it is a weakness to want for this, my love of God should need no reward"

What is their strongest memory?:

Pope Marantus XXIIX at the Cathedral Magna of St Lavarosse, the magnificence of this vision has kept him going strong whenever it seems like he might fail.

What is the most important thing in life as they see it?:

"Strong Faith and a Sharp Mind"

How are they related to those around them?:

He sees Argos as more of a friend than a lackey or bodyguard and has been traveling with him since the incident on Catterall. He worries about those around him, but trusts them to tell him if there is anything wrong.

Lifepath comments:

His recent professional life has been occupied with searching out the roots of the Chrome conspiracy and may compulsively try to link the object of his current focus with something larger. Prior to this he was more accepting that an incident could be isolated.
