The slim sector known as Goldquarter marks the southern boundary of
[//]
. The island was bounded the River Sherm, but as the planet's infrastructure grew to class 4, skyscrapers crowded in on both sides of the river, balconies beginning to overhang the once picturesque docks. At some point, the stallholders in the old fishmarket decided that they could raise the popularity of their area by building a new 'open market', with more access to the sun. They spun a lattice of downline between the balconies of the buildings on either side of the river, from which they hung a series of "golden" bridges (though these were in fact made of cerament-fibre, gilded with an artificial alloy designed to look like gold. Along this lattice of gold-and-glass bridges were dozens of hanging platforms, each large enough to hold dozens of market stalls.

As the hanging market grew in popularity, more bridges were added, and many of the founders built permenant stores and homes among the wires. Within a decade, the fishmarket now traded almost exclusively in "folk art" and souveniers, as the light filtered through the gold-and-glass arcades cut off light to the river below, dramatically changing the ecosystem.

Now, Goldquarter is an ideosyncratic blend of teleworkers' homes (being one of the few areas of the city where the original founders' descendants don't have to pay ground rent on their homes) and an exotic bazaar, trading in everything from spices and pottery to tattoos and mercenaries. The whole sector is accessible only on foot, and the streets are still all gold filigree-effect bridges hanging from a web of reflective wires. The buildings either continue this style, or hang among the wires like crystals. External mirrors and glasswork are common, meaning that a good degree of daylight reaches the streets even with 4 or 5 levels of bridges overhead.

The sector lies between city levels A55 and A85, although its own levels are more separated. At any given point along the old river, there may be between 4 and 7 levels with actual walkways and buildings on. The sector runs from east to west for about two thirds of a mile, and varies between 100 and 180m wide. Below it lie the sectors
Harbour and Den, although the bridges don't connect with these. The space above is technically part of [1], although nobody has ever built out above this sector. Along the northern bank, Goldquarter's bridges connect to (from west to east) bridge, [2], Dresden/[3] and Star. To the south, its neighbours are Castille, [4]/Goldsmiths, Street
,
[/Romance] and [/Beltline]
.
