In many cultures, trial by combat has been fashionable again in the last few centuries.

The church has sanctified this practise for civil disagreements, under the traditional belief that God will give aid to those with a just cause. However, it is still possible that for criminal cases, a person challenged to a duel under local laws could still appeal to the Ecclesiastical Court for a real trial.

The actual status of duelling varies between planets, according to appropriate local law. Some organisations such as guilds have their own codes, but these may still be illegal under the rules of a particular system. In these cases, members of a guild can arrange to hold the duel elsewhere in order to satisfy both the guild and planetary legislation.

Some organisations, however, will attempt to use their own rules regardless of local law. Members of some of these organisations have been known to challenge outsiders to a duel for some imagined slight even on worlds such as Bane. The most common two situations are where either an organisation uses its political power or wealth to influence the legislative and judicial systems in order to press for their rules to apply (for exampe the upper-class society Allentria), or to hold duels and sometimes even illegal 'trials' in secret (such as those held by the Divine Blade).
