Class 1 planets are often separated from outside contact for long periods, and only have a limited technological infrastructure.

A class 1 planet does not usually have a downline. If a temporary line is present at all, ships may anchor to the top of the line and vehicles may ascend or descend under their on power.

Planets of this class rarely have global mass transit. In some cases, such planets may have islands or even entire continents without human habitation.

Communication with other planets is usually via low-bandwidth ansible or interspace relay satellites. The relatively low GDP of this tech level means that the cost of these systems will often be bourne by citizens who use them, leading to much heavier use of a physical postal service for less urgent messages.

At present, there are just over a hundred class 1 planets. Most of these consider themselves to be in a transitional phase between class 0 and class 2, and will only remain at this classification for a few decades.

Planets are promoted from class 0 to class 1 when a stable information network and ansible is installed. Rising to class 2 requires the installation of one or more permanent downlines, with a permenant port at the line station and elevators for lifting cargo.
